The National Whistlers Convention begins today in Louisburg, North Carolina.

The Army-McCarthy hearings began on this day in 1954, four years after Senator Joseph McCarthy announced that red agents had infiltrated the State Department, beginning the witch hunt that ruined many innocent people. McCarthy was later censured by the Senate, and died in disgrace in 1957.

It's the birthday of American-born Irish novelist, playwright, and short-story writer J. P. Donlevey (THE GINGER MAN), born in Brooklyn in 1926.

The Nobel Prize winning author Halldor Laxness (THE FISH CAN SING; PARADISE RECLAIMED), was born on this day in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1902.

Today is the anniversary of both the birth and death of poet and playwright William Shakespeare, born in Stratford-on-Avon, England, 1564. He was 18 when he married the 26 year old Anne Hathaway when she became pregnant, they later moved to London where he worked as both an actor and a playwright, writing 154 sonnets and 36 plays.
