It's the birthday in Stockholm, 1930, of the Swedish writer, MARGARETA EKSTROM, author of novels, poetry, and many short stories in collections such as The Day I Began My Studies in Philosophy, and Death's Midwives, which came out in the 1980s.

It's the birthday in Christchurch, New Zealand, 1899, of mystery writer NGAIO MARSH, best known for her 31 novels about Inspector Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard — books like Overture to Death, Death of a Fool, and Dead Water.

It's the birthday of STEPHEN DOUGLAS, born in 1813 in Brandon, Vermont, famous for his debates with Abraham Lincoln when they were running for the Senate in 1858.

It's the day we celebrate the birth of WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, 1564.
